Internet Safety
Many of our students are using the Internet at home. These are some safety tips for parents and students.
Children are using the
Internet for:
Email
IM (Instant Messaging)
Chat rooms
Games
Research
What are some of the rules for using the Internet safely?
Never give out your name
Never give out your address, town or school
Never answer personal questions
Never agree to meet anyone
Things for students to remember:
1. You can't hide behind
a screen name; it can be found out.
2. You don't walk up to strangers at the mall and give them personal information.
Likewise, you shouldn't give out personal information to strangers over the
Internet.
3. If anyone asks questions that make you feel uncomfortable, quit out. Don't
answer the questions -- even with lies.
4. If anyone (anywhere) talks to you and makes you feel uncomfortable, tell
a trusted adult.
5. Use your good sense: If a situation doesn't feel right, leave it. Quit out.
Tell your parents or a teacher or another adult.
6. It is NEVER your fault if someone asks inappropriate questions. It is likely
that a person who does this is not really your friend so don't answer any questions
that are inappropriate.
7. The Internet is a great place to learn, to play games, to find music, and
to chat with friends. Using common sense while using the Internet will keep
you safe.
Tips for Parents:
* Web sites designed by students should be frequently monitored. Check all the
links.
** It is advisable to place computers in family areas of the home; not in bedrooms.
* Check into purchasing security software that can block inappropriate sites.
* Any questions? Contact the school or the District computer department.
